Is your teenager a junk sleeper?
Hi tech gadgets like computers and televisions in their bedrooms mean a huge number of teenagers are missing out on a good night's sleep according to recent research. An online poll of 1000 12-16 year olds carried out by the Sleep Council found that a third of teens were exhausted after getting just four to seven hours a night rather than the recommended eight hours. Almost a quarter said they fall asleep more than once a week weatching television, listening to music or using other electronic gadgets.
'What we are seeing is the emergence of junk sleep' explains Dr Chris Idzikowski of the Edinburgh Sleep Centre.
'This kind of sleep is neither the length nor quality required to feed the brain with the rest it needs to perform properly.'
So how do you get your teenager to switch off and snuggle down?
'Encourage regular exercise, suggest cutting back on caffeine and try to encourage a set 'Wind Down Routine'.
The best 'Wind Down Routine' may be achieved with a Dawn Simulation Alarm Clock
It simulates a sunset with gradually fading light and a sunrise with gradually brightening light, the most natural triggers for wake up and sleep.
So when its time to go to bed and the main lights are switched off, the Dawn Simulation Alarm Clock is at full glow and gradually fades away completely to trigger the most natural start to a good nights sleep.
And in the morning about 30 minutes before the set waking up time the Dawn Simulation Alarm Clock begins to glow from dark to full glow triggering a gentle natural awakening and the start to a wonderful new day.
