Our modern lifestyle is different to that of our ancestors in one crucial way. We live a relatively confined lifestyle. We routinely spend most of our time inside, an unnatural life in artificially lit surroundings, be it at home, at study, at work or at leisure. Our lives offer minimal exposure to natural daylight, especially in the Northern Hemisphere in the Autumn, Winter and early Spring.

Even when we travel, it's in closed vehicles or underground.

Yet, only a hundred or so years ago most people spent 75% of their time outside. Today the reverse is true. We were never made for such an existence.
